Marilyn Monroe born this day – June 1, 1926

Marilyn Monroe and her quotable quote on Goodreads, is the second most appreciated quotation on the social network platform.  As of this writing, the quotation has more than 88,000 “likes”.

The  Marilyn Monroe quote is – “I’m selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best.”

The quote is attributed to the celebrity but there is no source. Perhaps the source is the ghost of a  wishing public .  Perhaps, the  public’s collective unconscious  wanted the victim to say something as pithy and brazen as this and willed it into history.

Goodreads is the social network platform for reading. It is a safe place where readers can share  their favorite books, special highlights of books and recommend books to their friends. According to company press releases, Goodreads has 16 million users. The seemingly unstoppable, on-line behemoth, Amazon, recently purchased Goodreads for  an undisclosed amount but many experts say it could be close to 1 billion dollars.

It is indeed amazing that the legacy of the blonde superstar continues  in the 21st century.  Whether or not the quote is true, the quotation speaks to a fascinating  and robbed life . The comely comedienne never seemed to manage the balancing act of love. That can be said of many of us and that is part of her fame.

It is remarkable that Marilyn Monroe  beats out the literary and philosophical giants of western  history including Marc Aurelius and Aristotle. It points to the  truth of public appreciation  of celebrity over  other  qualifiers.

The only quotation listed higher on Goodreads carries almost 100,000 “likes”. It contains  a certain irony in relationship  to Marilyn’s life.

It is from Dr. Seuss. “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

This is one of my favorite pictures of Marilyn Monroe ( Norma Jeane Mortenson ) with one of her heroes, Abraham Lincoln, taken in Hollywood on an undetermined date –
